PAST, PRESENT, FUTURE
TOOLS FOR TIMEKEEPING & RITUAL
Past, present, and future connect our hurdling through time as a single thread that anchors us within the flow of existence. Past foundations, memories, and lessons buoy the fleeting present where life unfolds and where we feel, looking ahead to a wide, unknown future. Together, past, present, and future form a continuum, each influencing the other, as we move through life and time connected. Halloween and Día de los Muertos celebrate time and memory, blurring the line between the past and present across a few days where numerous traditions believe the veil between the living and the dead to be the thinnest. These days invite us to honor and explore the mystery and inevitability of death with an emphasis on transmuting fear into fun, grief into honor and celebration. Timekeeping is a powerful ritual that gives shape to the amorphous qualities of life, weaving order into the rhythmic but chaotic grind of our day-to-day. With clocks, calendars, and seasons, we mark beginnings and endings. From the end of harvest season and the coming of winter, to the much-debated Daylight Saving Time, we fall back into ritual for a sense of continuity and purpose. Light the candles, make a wish.
